BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - SUPPORTERS of the St. Kitts Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) showed their full confidence in the Douglas-led administration today (July 8) when, as requested, they appeared on Church Street donning red.
The request for going out in red and showing support for the government was made by Sen. Nigel Carty and Constituency Number Seven hopeful for the SKNLP Dr. Vance Gilbert last evening at the Party's Full Confidence meeting in Central Basseterre.
This morning, while a very large number of persons stood on the perimeter of the Government Headquarters praising each member of the Government Bench as they passed by on their way to Parliament, a small group took their support on the inside and filled the seats of the Parliamentary Gallery in anticipation of the day's activities.
As each Government Member entered the Parliament, they were met with bright smiles and pleasant "good morning" from the supporters, many of whom wore all red including jewellery and shoes.
The supporters appeared equally pleased to see that the Hon. Sam Condor and the Hon. Timothy Harris entered with the Opposition and also sat with them.
As the morning's activities commenced, the individuals in the Gallery sat quietly, but shortly after Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas rose to make a statement, which was regarding the march held on Friday (July 5) by the People's Action Movement (PAM), bickering ensued between the two Benches and spilled over into the Gallery.
They were heard making comments in agreement with the government’s side. Comments such as "it's true" and "yes you're right" echoed from the Labour supporters, warranting the police officers on duty in Parliament to call "order".
This occurred a few times after, as each time bickering erupted between the two Benches, comments from the Gallery were heard, all in agreement with the ruling party.
The full show of confidence was seen when the Members on the Opposition Bench walked out of Parliament.
Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Mark Brantley had risen to voice that they would not be participating in the Parliamentary proceedings until the Motion of No Confidence was included on the Order Paper to be debated and voted on.
He, along with all other Opposition Members, left the House much to the delight of the SKNLP supporters, as they clapped and rejoiced.
As they walked out, comments were heard from the Government Members, including "go ahead" and "good riddance".
A number of the supporters left the Gallery and followed the Opposition Members outside the Government Headquarters while taunting them.
They were heard shouting "get out", "we ain't want you here", "allyou going lose next election", among other less dignified statements.
The other supporters stayed on the inside as Parliament continued with only the participation of Members on the Government Bench.
