    President Hugo Chavez

CARACAS, Venezuela – VENEZUELAN President Hugo Chavez announced yesterday (Dec. 1) that he would seek a constitutional amendment to allow himself to seek re-election, a year after voters rejected a similar proposal.

According to Caribbean Net News, Chavez is continuing his effort to consolidate power eight days after winning most of the nation’s states in regional elections, although opposition leaders gained in big states and in the capital.

Approximately 45 percent of the population will now be governed by politicians from the opposition, who won in sates representing around 70 percent of national economic activity.

However, Chavez insists that the opposition suffered a defeat, stating “they continue overestimating what happened as a victory, which is crazy”. ~~Adz:Right~~

“Today we begin the battle for constitutional amendment. I am ready and if I am healthy, God willing, I will be with you until 2019, until 2021,” he declared.

Chavez first came to power in 1998 and without a constitutional change he will have to leave office in 2013.

In 2007 he narrowly lost a broad constitutional reform referendum that would have abolished presidential term limits while expanding his powers and enshrining socialism as the country’s economic system.
