Navigating "Island" Parenting is a submission of quotes, tips and parenting advice that I have gathered over the years as a source of inspiration and as tools to deal with the daily challenges of parenting. It was Alvin Price who said, “Parents need to fill a child’s bucket of self-esteem so high that the rest of the world can’t poke enough holes in it to drain it dry.” This week’s edition is inspired by Mr. Price’s quote as it focuses on building self-esteem and character. The hope is that this submission would cause you to reflect on your own parenting skills, and make the journey of parenting a bit easier or brighter, even if it is for one person.
As parents we are often preoccupied with ensuring that our children are well-fed, that they are clean, healthy, and well educated, but how often do we do a wellness check up to see if their self-esteem is running on full? How often do we do a wellness check up of ourselves to check whether or not we are doing our part in feeding our children a healthy diet of self-esteem; that which would assist in nurturing their spirit or self-worth? This week I have chosen to share with you some of my favourite quotes on self-esteem with the hope that you would not only reflect but also share them with your children.
Each Second We Live in a New and Unique Moment
by Pablo Casals
“Each second we live in a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that never was before and will never be again. And what do we teach our children in school? We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France. When will we teach them what they are? We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all of the world there is no other child exactly like you. In the millions of years that have passed there has never been another child like you. And look at your body-what a wonder it is! Your legs, your arms, your cunning fingers, the way they move! You may become Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything.”

Listen to the Never Haves
Then listen close to me,

ANYTHING can be!
Sow an act
by Charles Reade
Sow an act,
and you reap a habit.
Sow a habit,
and you reap a character.
Sow a character,
and you reap a destiny.
Do all the good you can.

Do all the good you can
By all the means you can
In all the ways you can
In all the places you can
To all the people you can,
As long as ever you can.
