BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THIS media house earlier today (Jul. 10) reported that the home of the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Hon. Curtis Martin, was shot at and he did not sustain any injury.
Numerous attempts, by telephone, were made to contact Martin during working hours, but it was not until sometime after 4:30 p.m. he was met in the vicinity of his home at Stapleton Estate Yard, where he indicated that he had no comment to make on the incident.
Prior to speaking with Martin, SKNVibes visited his home at about midday, but did not enter the yard, and observed a number of men engaged in construction work on the building.
A survey revealed that there were no pockmarks on the building to indicate shots were fired at it. However, the right side of the Speaker’s vehicle bears the strike of a bullet.
Speaking with a number of residents in that area, this media house learned that shots were indeed fired but none of them had ventured outside of their home to investigate.
“I heard about six shots fired. It was about 1:30 this morning while I was in bed, but I cannot say who fired them or who or what the intended target was. I’m not an inquisitive person, so I quietly remained in my home and was too scared to go outside,” one resident said.
Another resident also claimed to have heard the sounds of gunfire around the same time, but not as many as the aforementioned.
“I’m not certain about the time…I think it was between 1:00 and 1:45. I was asleep and was awakened by the sound of gunshots. I heard about three of them. I remained alert and for more than an hour I kept listening out for the sound of an ambulance, but none came. And I thought to myself that no one was injured or the EMS would have already been there. But it was not until later in the morning that I heard the shots were fired at Mr. Martin’s house.”
A few others noted that they, too, heard the reports of gunfire but were incapable of discerning from whence they came.
SKNVibes eagerly awaits the findings and dissemination of the police’s investigation in this high profile incident.
