Battle for Final Four places heats up

Members of Delphic Newtown United FC prepare for battle (L) and part of the action involving members of the S.L. Horsford’s St. Paul’s FC

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - TEAMS are now on the hunt for two spots in the Final Four as the regular season winds down in the SKNFA Digicel Premier Division.

With Conaree and Garden Hotspurs already qualified for the play-offs, three teams are now fighting for the final two spots. The teams are Rams Village Superstars, S.L. Hosford’s St. Paul’s and defending champions Delphic Newtown United.

Playing at the Garden’s Playfield on Saturday (Jul. 13), Rams Village Superstars sent a strong message after they found the net seven times in their match against the relegation-threatened Cayon FC.

Though falling behind from a Kurt Morton penalty, the Village team found four quick goals to take a 4-1 lead at the end of the first half.

The second half was pretty much the same as Village continued their dominance of the game.

Scoring for Rams Village Superstars were Stevie Clarke who struck twice in the 47th and 63th minutes, Austin Henry in the 19th minute, Lionel Morson in the 23rd minute, Joel Jeffers who struck twice in the 24th and 68th minutes and Dahjal Kelly in the 47th minute.

Scoring for Cayon FC were Kurt Morton who struck twice in the 15th and 83rd minutes, both from the penalty spot, and Leverton Jeffers in the 75th minute.

Officials were Kimbell Ward, O'Brien Clarke, Mario Parry and Travester Richards.

In Match two at the same venue, Conaree FC and Delphic Newtown United held out to a 1-all draw. The defending champions, Newtown, were desperate for a win to secure a final four berth but had to settle for a draw against the League leaders.

In an exciting encounter, both teams traded ‘punches’ with little effect in the first half.

The second half however provided even more exciting football as Conaree sought to disappoint Newtown when they took the lead through Shawn Martin’s 67th minute strike.

The champions however responded with a rebounded effort which was tapped home by Kennedy Isles in the 75th minute.

Sunday’s (Jul. 14) first matchup at St. Paul’s Playfield saw Mantab and St. Thomas Trinity Strikers engaging in fierce competition, but just like Conaree and Newtown, neither team managed to outscore the other; hence, only one point was afforded to each. The game ended nil-all.

Officials were Tristley Bassue, Walter James, Stedroy Douglas and Delroy Jeffers.

The last game of the weekend saw Final Four hopefuls S.L. Horsford’s St. Paul’s, on their home turf, going up against Harris Paint St. Peter’s. Team St. Pauls, which needed the win to stay in the race, convinced their fans that they deserved to have a spot.

Four goals to one was the final score and St. Paul’s hold steady in fifth position.

Scoring was opened by Javeem Blanchette in the 32nd before the advantage was doubled in 34th minute by Terrance Ward.

In the second half, St. Peter’s showed some fight when Dionis Stevens’ 58th minute strike pulled them within one.

However, Terrance Ward got his second goal for St. Paul’s in the 72nd minute while Javeem Blanchette also got his second of the game in the 77th minute.
