BASSETERRE St. Kitts, July 17th 2013 - Humble, committed, dependable, patient and loving are words once can use to describe this honoree. She is the proud mother of two handsome sons, Ruel and Kenny.
This honoree is none other than the beautiful and adorable, Mrs. Ethlyn Angelica Richardson. Jella, as she is affectionately called by those who know her well, began her teaching career in May of 1979. If you do your calculations correctly you will see she has taught for thirty four (34) years.
Ethlyn’s heart’s desire was to always serve her community well, not particularly as a teacher but in any way she could. She was able to successfully live out her dream when a teaching job was offered to her at the then Sandy Point Infant School. She quickly took it and vowed that she would make a difference in the lives that she taught.
Ethlyn loved the teaching profession and wanted to learn as much as she can. Realizing that she needed special, methods, skills, strategies and techniques to deploy her job efficiently and effectively, she took the advice of her then head teacher Mrs. Walters and enrolled in the St. Kitts & Nevis Teacher’s Training College in 1983. There she completed a two (2) year course in Education in 1985.
She rejoined her former staff in September of 1985 which was now merged with the Sandy Point Junior School to form the now Sandy Point Primary School. At this institution she worked under the headships of Ms. Rosabel Warner, Mrs. Marilyn Guishard Bertie, Mr. Anthony Wiltshire, Mrs. Marilyn Maynard and Mrs. Jenifer Dolphin respectively who all thought that she was a very hard working teacher.
Jella taught all the grades, from kg to grade six (6) with students of varying abilities. On staff she was perceived by colleagues as having the faith of job. For example, she was stuck with one particular problem student for three years but she did not complain. She would just smile and start again.
She worked hard with all her students. She loved and cared for them. Some were easy to get along with, showed interest in their work and became very successful. While others were difficult to get through to but, she never gave up. She would come back with something else to try to ensure that her students learned.
Ethlyn’s passion for singing, allowed her to be the director of our school’s choir and lead singer on staff. She raised the tunes for many of the hymns during morning assembly. Her love for craft, decorating and gardening led her to engage in these extracurricular activities at the school. Every time the school had a function bet your life Mrs. Richardson was there with her white tablecloth and floral arrangement.
She was so good at it, that she was called the minister of beautification. Most recently, she headed an outdoor beautification competition in the form of a flower garden, which brought about a great transformation to our school’s surroundings. As a matter of fact, the beautiful decoration that you see here today was done by Jella and her team.
Ethlyn got along with everyone on staff. She was a member of the School’s Management Team and Head of Grade Three classes where she worked the longest. She is certainly a very talented lady.
We are going to miss Ethlyn dearly. As a matter of fact, we are missing her already. I do not know if we are going to find another one like her. We have had some very good times together. Who is going to take over all those things she did for the school? Someone will have the hard task of fitting into her shoes.
Ladies and gentlemen, as this is her last graduation as a member of staff, we are using this opportunity to show our appreciation for the great work she has done at our school and in the teaching profession on a whole. Ethlyn we feel very proud to honour you on this day. Ladies and gentlemen I present to you beautiful, talented, faithful, Mrs. Ethlyn Angelica Richardson.
