Basseterre, St.Kitts (July 18th 2013) -- Well over 300 patriotic, concerned and politically engaged women representing “Women of Unity” hosted another hugely successful townhall styled meeting on Monday evening at the OOJJ’s Conference Center in Camps.
The “Women of UNITY” group was initiated as part of the drive for the historic government of National UNITY. People’s Action Movement Chairperson Cyndie Demming , People’s Labour Party’s Mrs Jean Byron-Condor and Dr. Thelma Phillip-Browne along with hundreds of women from all walks of life came together with a goal of supporting and or spearheading the historic drive to a government of national UNITY.
According to Cyndie Demming, the meeting on Monday was designed to lay the groundwork for their goals.
“The women think they are an important part of the community, and need to be part of the decision-making,” said Demming. She said that as part of that drive, the women were also discussing the issues they wanted to put forward for inclusion in party manifesto(s).
The meeting also covered important national issues and discussions were had on education, youth development, agriculture, land and housing, policy and fund-raising. Housing was an area that the Women felt was critical in the development of Women and the country. Demming said “We thought that housing should be distributed equally; for example, everybody in St. Kitts should be able to own not only a piece of land, but also get a house. We will move away from giving houses to (only) people who support our party, but rather everybody will get a house irrespective of which party they support.”
Mrs Condor expressed pleasure at the “enthusiasm of the ladies,” saying also that they were highly “motivated”, and were bringing new ideas to the table.
She said that the meeting was also intended to plan “immediate, medium, and long term activities.” “We’ve been able to come up with a few activities that that we want to do…this is a life-changing experience…we’re not just seeing it as there’s a government that we want to change, but that it should bring about changes in our lifestyle; the way we look at things and so on, so the women are really digging in and coming up with great ideas…”
“I believe we’re on the right track here,” Condor said.
She reiterated and supported the notion that women and in deed the “Women of Unity” had a crucial role to play in nurturing democracy. “ I think that women always have a role to play and sometimes they do it very quietly…I think as a national group that people must see us and understand that women are a force to be reckoned with; we are going to make things happen.”
People’s Action Movement Deputy Political Leader Hon. Eugene Hamilton commented on the success of the “Women of UNITY” “In a short space of time It is indeed heartening and not surprising to see the tremendous impact the Women of UNITY are having on not only the political landscape but also on the community as has been seen by the activities they have organized since their inception including the Prayer Vigil and March held some 3-4 weeks ago which drew thousands. As our women go so to our nation. And our women are clearly showing us the way and the way is UNITY,” said PAM Deputy Leader Hon. Eugene Hamilton.
