Constituencies Three and Eight candidates to be announced next week

Hon. Nigel Carty
By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN less than a week, the constituents of St. Christopher Three and Eight will know who their St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) representative for the upcoming General Elections would be.

This was the affirmation given to SKNVibes today (July 18) by Deputy Chairman of the SKNLP the Hon. Nigel Carty.

For several months the constituents have heard specific names being thrown about as possibilities to fill the vacant slots.

In Constituency Number Eight – for example – former Parliamentary Representative Cedric R. Liburd was one of the strongest possibilities which this publication was made aware of and, more recently, Dr. Terrence Drew was added as a popular option.

And while there is still some talk of at least one woman throwing her hat into the ring, no name has been forthcoming.

As for Constituency Number Three, Attorney General the Hon. Jason Hamilton, calypsonian Konris Maynard and Osbert France, the grandson of National Hero the Rt. Excellent Sir Joseph Nathaniel France, are the options from which a choice will be made.

According to Carty, the SKNLP has been involved in a “very intense process of candidate selection over the last two or three weeks”.

He said all the groundwork have been completed but, it recent times, the process has been consolidated and on Wednesday (July 24) the candidates for these areas would be announced.

“We had done our own research, but recently we have consolidated the process by speaking to the respective branches and I am aware that over the last week the Prime Minister and party have been engaged in discussions. And we have a commitment that certainly by next week we would have knowledge of who those candidates would be.”

Whoever is selected as the St. Christopher Three candidate would be replacing the former Deputy Prime Minister and former Deputy Leader of the SKNLP, the Hon. Sam Condor, and would have to do battle at the polls against  him.

Condor now holds the position of Deputy Leader of the People’s Labour Party.

Should Liburd be selected as the St. Christopher Eight candidate, his battle at the polls would be a familiar one. He will be going up against the Hon. Eugene Hamilton of the People’s Action Movement. The only difference however, is that Liburd would now be seeking to regain his seat.
