Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 16, 2013 (PAM Communications Unit) – A series of town hall meetings is being planned by opposition parties in St. Kitts and Nevis, to help sensitize the public about the possible changes that are being considered for the electoral boundaries in the territory.
Details of the public forums were revealed on Wednesday by the People’s Action Movement, PAM, which indicated that three meetings will be held, in the first phase of the exercise, commencing on Monday 22nd July, 2013.
During the meetings, the focus will be placed on how such changes may affect the ordinary citizen and the voters in particular. An official of PAM also indicated that through the various presentations that will be made, exposure will be given to the real motive for the planned changes and how the opposition hopes to respond.
Speaking in New York on Sunday, 14th July, 2013, PAM leader Shawn Richards said that the latest plot of the government is to change the electoral boundaries in both St. Kitts and Nevis. “This we cannot allow to happen. A government that is in the minority and illegitimate cannot abuse state power to create an unfair and illegal advantage to win the election,” stated the PAM leader.
The party has publicly stated that it has learnt of some of the proposed changes that have been presented to the Constituency Boundaries Commission, (CBC), including the division of the town of Sandy point in half, and tagging sections of that constituency to parts of Newton Ground and St. Pauls.
PAM has also revealed that the government is planning to make the Parish of St. Peters a separate constituency while also removing sections of Central Basseterre, including McKnight and Irish Town, from that electoral district. Another plot under consideration said Richards is to change up the constituencies in such a way to force PAM’s Deputy Leader, Eugene Hamilton to run against the Leader of the newly formed People’s Labour Party, PLP, Dr. Timothy Harris.
All these changes are being contemplated said Richards as part of the scheme under consideration to steal the next election that he said the government knows it will lose once free and fair elections are held.
The town hall meetings will be held in accordance with the following schedule:
• Monday 22ndJuly, Old Girls School, Victoria Road, Basseterre
• Wednesday 24th July, 2013, the Anglican School Hall, The Alley, Sandy Point
• Monday 29th July, 2013, Community Centre, Cayon
All meetings will be held from 7:30pm and are expected to be carried live on radio and streamed via the internet.
