BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - DEFENDING champions of Digicel Premier Division Delphic Newtown United have been dealt a blow in their push for a Final Four spot when they suffered a 2-0 defeat by S.L. Hosford’s St. Paul’s last evening (Jul. 18) at the Gardens Playfield
Both teams are in battle for one of the spots in the Final Four and were desperate to collect three crucial points in last night’s encounter in order to put themselves in the best possible position to achieve that goal.
The game started with both teams demonstrating their anxiety to ensure that their place in the playoffs is secured.
They both created opportunities in the first half to take the lead but all were squandered, leaving the game goalless by half time.
The second half flowed in a similar vein until the deadlock was broken in an unexpected fashion.
St. Paul’s opened their account in the 52nd minute after being awarded a free kick from the left side of Newtown’s goal.
Austin Lewis took the shot and skilfully placed the ball to the back of the net, which evaded all of the payers who had bunched in the 18-yard box.
St. Paul’s fans burst into ruptures while their Newtown counterparts were left distraught and in shock at what had happened.
Being one goal down, Newtown stepped up the tempo and threatened to equalise, but a counter attack from St. Paul’s led to a corner kick which provided the opportunity for Terrence Warde to rise above the defender and head the ball into the back of the net in the 70th minute.
Though down two goals, Newtown continued to fight as they sought to pull victory from the jaws of defeat but failed, because of squandered opportunities with the final one coming from talisman Ian ‘Rumpy Lake who headed a late opportunity straight into the hands of the goalkeeper.
This defeat leaves Newtown with an outside chance of making the Final Four .
