St. Kitts Ministry of Culture revealed new Logo for the National Arts Festival at the 100th Year Anniversary of his Excellency Sir C. A. Paul Southwell

    BASSETERRE St. Kitts, July 22nd, 2013   --  The new logo for St. Kitts-Nevis “National Arts Festival”, which will be revived during the 30th Anniversary of St. Christopher (Kitts) and Nevis Independence Celebrations in September, was un-veiled at the luncheon celebrating the 100th Year Anniversary of His Excellency Sir. C. A. Paul Southwell at Carambola, Friars Bay St. Kitts on Thursday July 18th his birth date. 

     

    A framed logo was introduced by Sharon Rattan, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Culture on be-half of the Minister of Culture the Honorable Marcella Liburd who was unable to attend.  It was graciously received by Southwell grandchildren; Jairzinho, Yannick and Abena from the Hon. Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas. The logo, designed by revered National Artist Dennis Richards, consists of four arches representing St. Kitts-Nevis National Flag colours (red, yellow, green, black), enclosing the four main Creative and Cultural Industry Sectors; Visual, Performing, Literary and Culinary Arts, on a white background with the center arch embracing a photograph of His Excellency Sir. C. A. Paul Southwell, who initiated the first National Arts Festival in 1964, and to whom the festival is dedicated, over the theme “Explore, Nurture, Value and Promote”.

    The theme is sending a strong message to the public to Explore, Nurture, Value and Promote St. Kitts Creative and Cultural Industry; Explore and celebrate the rich and diverse culture and heritage of Kittitians and Nevisians expressed through Performing, Visual, Literary, and Culinary Arts; Nurture, stimulate, and instill in the minds of children, young people, and adults the importance of embracing and using different art forms as tools of education, to build careers, strive for excellence, foster pride, and develop the Creative and Cultural Industry; Value and appreciate the talented artists and artisans who immortalize St. Kitts and Nevis traditions, customs, language, artifacts and history in all its glory conveyed through the Arts; Promote and share St. Kitts and Nevis Creative and Cultural Industry with its Caribbean and Global neighbours to showcase what is truly Kittitian and Nevisian.

    The revival of the National Arts Festival is expected to showcase the best of St. Kitts-Nevis Creative and Cultural Industry every two years, while providing an additional treat for nationals and visitors who embark upon St. Kitts and Nevis.  The presentation of the logo was planned at this time to honour and compliment the memory of His Excellency Sir Caleb Azariah Paul Southwell, July 18th 1913 – May 18th 1979, whose family marked his 100th Year Anniversary on his birth date with one week of activities in St. Kitts and Nevis celebrating his role as Father, his numerous accomplishments, and his contribution to the development of the St. Kitts and Nevis.

    Initiated by Rustum Southwell, a replica of his father, First, second, and third generation Southwell’s arrived in St. Kitts-Nevis from Canada, North American and Caribbean locations on Sunday July 14th to reunite and commemorate Sir. C. A. Paul Southwells’ lifetime endevours, which include Labour Movement Organizer and Vice-President (1947) of the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union, Minister of Communication and Works, Deputy Premier (1967), and Premier of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla (1978).

    Activities began on Monday July 15th with Rustum Southwell, Stanley Franks and Earl Clarke recalling and sharing treasured memories of Sir. C. A. Paul Southwell on “In Focus”, a televised program on ZIZ Broadcasting Limited.  On Wednesday July 17th family and friends gathered for an afternoon ceremony including prayers, sentiments, and the laying of flowers at Springfield Cemetary Basseterre St. Kitts, the burial site of Sir. C. A. Paul Southwell. 

    Thursday July 18th christened the day with a morning Celebration Service at the Wesley Methodist Church Seaton Street Basseterre St. Kitts directed by Reverend Dr. Wycherley Gumbs. Then, an afternoon luncheon at Carambola Friars Bay St. Kitts was lead by Vesta Southwell, Master of Ceremonies, and attended by Southwell Family Members, the Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas Prime Minister of St. Christopher (Kitts) and Nevis, Governor General H.E. Sir. Edmond Lawrence and Lady Lawrence, H. E. Ambassador Li-Jey Tsao and Mrs. Tsao St. Kitts-Nevis Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Minister’s and Permanent Secretaries of Government, Members of the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union, Colleagues, Family and Friends. St. Kitts Department of Culture entertained guests with a performance by Drumming Specialist Royd Phipps and a poem named “Happy Centenary Paul Southwell”, recited by Ras Dabo Penny Assistant Research and Documentation Specialist.

    The week of activities will end on Saturday July 20th with a morning golf tournament at the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club Frigate Bay St. Kitts appropriately named “The Right Excellent Sir Caleb A. P. Southwell Golf Classic”, as he was known as one of the pioneers of Golf and Tourism in St. Kitts and Nevis.
