PLP’s policy statement on boundary changes

Commentary

Dr. Denzil Douglas’ attempts to gerrymander the electoral boundaries comes at a time, not coincidentally, when his popularity is at an historic low.

All scientifically based indications are that the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, which Dr. Douglas has led for almost a quarter century, stands a chance of winning no more than one (1) seat in the upcoming general election, forced upon the maladministration of Dr. Douglas.

That notwithstanding, this illegitimate Prime Minister has this false notion that changing the boundaries will keep him in office to impose another five (5) years of economic pain and financial suffering upon the hard working people of this country.

By pursuing the boundary changes at this time, albeit under the cloak of a belated moral obligation to the constitution, Dr. Douglas has shown once again that he is woefully out of touch with the everyday realities of the people who live, work and play in this wonderful country of ours, St. Kitts and Nevis.

Dr. Douglas should know by now that no amount of boundary change; no gifts to foreigners ,under the pretext of foreign investment, from the SIDF slush fund that accesses and utilizes our passport moneys in clear violation of section 69 of our constitution; no extended delay of the debate and vote on the motion of no confidence filed by the opposition more than seven (7) months ago; no threats of a “revolution in this country” if the Unity team wins the next election; no posturing as a ten-man-in-one who is bad since he born; no vulgar theatrics masquerading as “entertainment” on public platforms will derail the will of over 70% of voters in this country who have endured over eighteen (18) years of abusive and condescending utterances that characterize the galloping dictatorial Douglas doctrine.

The fact is, the people of this country have made up their minds that it is time for Dr. Douglas to go…”Doctor You Done” is how one famous national calypsonian captures the essence of what people think of Dr. Douglas’ eighteen-year reign over this country. The people anxiously await the opportunity of an imminent election to turn the page on the Douglas era by casting their vote for CHANGE and embrace a new governance paradigm, usher in a new dispensation under a Unity government premised on tolerance, decorum, integrity, transparency and accountability in public office and which puts people at the epi-center of this country’s development agenda.

For our part, we the representatives of the majority of the people, we whom the people of this country call their elected majority in Parliament, we who come before you as leaders of the historic Unity movement, stand resolutely with you the people. We hear you loudly and clearly and that is why we have taken the principled stand to oppose the boundary changes attempted by this illegitimate, minority government, not because we are afraid to lose because in fact we know that boundary changes or no boundary changes, the people of the country will vote for the Unity government that they want and they deserve, but because it is our firm view that Dr. Douglas for more than seven (7) months has avoided the motion of no confidence, which he knows he will lose, and thus has no moral and/or constitutional basis to do anything in Parliament other than to have the motion of no confidence debated and voted upon.

That is the view of a majority of the people and that is why we have decided to heed the cries of the people and not participate in any matter or matters brought before Parliament by the minority and illegitimate Douglas government, other than the motion of no confidence. Once again, we call on the Governor General, Sir Edmund Lawrence and the Speaker of Parliament to do everything thing in their power to ensure the motion of no confidence is brought before Parliament without further delay, so that the people of this country can move forward, not divided, but in Unity, with pride, dignity, security and prosperity for ALL.
