BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IT is expected to pass to the north of the Leeward Islands early next week but as it advances, all eyes are on Tropical Storm Dorian which is churning its way through the Atlantic Ocean.
The TS – as at 11:00 a.m. today (July 25) - was located at 16.0N and 35.9W or approximately 1800 miles to the east of the Leeward Islands.
The system is travelling at a speed of 17 miles per hour (mph) and its maximum sustained winds are at 60mph.
Within an approximate six-hour period, the storm has progressed some, moving approximately 130 miles closer to the Caribbean. And as at 5:00 pm, it was located 16.5N and 37.8W or 1670 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands.
According to the forecast “little change in strength” is expected over the next two days and sometime between Sunday evening (July 28) and Monday morning, it should pass to the north of the Leeward and British Virgin Islands.
Residents of these areas are asked to closely monitor the system as it inches closer and they are also asked to prepare themselves for any eventualities.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on St. Kitts had indicated that it is monitoring the system and would provide relevant information as it draws nigh.
And as TS Dorian – the fourth TS for the Atlantic 2013 Hurricane Season - gets closer to the Caribbean, further updates would be provided by this publication.
