BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MEMBERS of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force came in for high praises from residents of Lower Market Street, Basseterre and some members of the public on Saturday night (Jul. 27) after they rescued an infant who was attacked by a pack of vicious dogs.
Information reaching SKNVibes states that shortly before 11:00, a resident of Lower Market Street heard the loud horrific cries of a pre-school child and the sound of dogs in attack mode emanating from within a fenced yard in Lower Market Street.
Upon realising that the child was being attacked by the pack, which amounted to six in number and included Pit Bulls, a Rottweiler and an Akita, the resident hailed a passing vehicle in which were police officers who went to investigate a drive-by shooting in McKnight.
The highly emotional resident told this media house that she explained to one of the officers what she believed was taking place in the yard, and one of them kicked open the locked gate and confronted the vicious dogs.
The resident said the officer had fired a single shot but she could not say if the bullet had struck any of dogs.
She also said that the officer was joined by another and together they managed to rescue the infant from the attacking dogs.
Another police vehicle had arrived at the scene and the officers placed the badly bitten child in one and took him to the hospital.
This media house learned that the boy and two other infants were left alone at home at the time of the incident.
One resident claimed that the infant’s mother was not at home during the attack and opined that “maybe he was sleeping and when he awoke did not see his mother, so he ventured out of the house into the yard and was attacked by the vicious dogs”.
A few onlookers told SKNVibes that the police should be commended for their act of bravery, while one of them said that “the dogs were not only large in number but also very vicious. Without the police officers’ timely intervention that little boy could have been dead”.
The Police Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Lyndon David, was contacted on this incident and he indicated that a press release would be issued shortly.
