Press Release

BRADES, Montserrat (July 29, 2013) – The Government of Montserrat has announced that a National song has been selected.

The song entitled “Motherland” written by Sir Howard Fergus and Dr George Irish was chosen following a selection process in which nationals at home and in the Diaspora were encouraged to make submissions to a select committee.

The three-phased competition extended over a period of seven months and culminated with a song showcase on Saturday July 27th 2013 at the Montserrat Cultural Centre. The selection process included providing opportunities for nationals to vote for the submission of their choice and Motherland was the runaway winner in that category.

This represents a more systematic attempt to confirm a national song for Montserrat and it is hoped that the chosen selection will be embraced by all and used appropriately.

The song displayed elements of Montserrat’s culture making reference to masques and drums. “In toil and tears to serve you well” are memorable lyrics highlighting aspects of Montserrat’s history.

The National Song Search Committee Chairman, Mr Justin Cassell in congratulating the winners described the song as “relevant and most importantly will stand the test of time.”

The Honourable Premier, Reuben T Meade on behalf of the Government of Montserrat expressed his gratitude not only for the members of the National Search Committee and adjudicators but to all persons who made submissions or contributed to the success of the project in anyway.
