BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - RESIDENTS of Dieppe Bay have something to celebrate this Culturama weekend; free shark meat, compliments Kenneth Millard and his relative.
The duo, who usually goes out fishing for sharks which are in turn sold in pieces to interested residents, hauled in a 600-pound shark on their Tuesday afternoon (July 30) fishing trip.
Speaking with SKNVibes, Millard said that he and his relative went out on their usual fishing trip and caught themselves a 10-foot long Tiger Shark in Dieppe Bay.
He said it took them about 15 minutes to get the shark from the boat to the sand with the help of persons who were on the beach.
The Dieppe Bay resident disclosed that this is not the biggest shark they have ever caught, but it is their first catch of the year and the smallest they have had in a long time. Their biggest catch, he said, weighed in at a whopping 1 000 pounds.
He said that their fishing boat was "down for some time", adding that they usually bring in a shark every three to four days.
Although the duo sells the sharks caught, they decided to be generous to the Dieppe Bay residents by giving away their catch.
Millard told this publication that he drives through the villages on a regular basis selling the meat of his catch, and that they usually "sell off" in a short amount of time.
"Our last catch was about 14 feet long and all of the pieces were sold in no time," he said.
When asked about their method of catching sharks, the part-time fisherman explained that they use rope, chicken and buoys.
"We use ropes with two buoys and set it out in the water about a quarter mile from shore with a whole chicken as bait. We set the line on the outside of the reef between Parson Ground and Dieppe Bay.
"If I don't have to work, we go out in the morning around 8:00 or 9:00. If I do work, we go out around 5:00 in the afternoon, set the line and wait a few hours until we see the buoy sink or sometimes we leave it overnight," Millard explained.
Millard stated that they are hoping to go out today and bring in a whopper.
So, the next time you want to cook a seafood delicacy for yourself and/or the entire family, head on over to Dieppe Bay and get a chunk of Millard's shark meat.
