    Secondary education receives boost from World Bank

     

    ~~Adz:Left~~ST. GEORGES, Grenada-ACCESS to secondary education in Grenada received a major boost last week after the World Bank Board of Directors approved a zero-interest credit loan worth US $1.9 million for infrastructure development.

     

    “The Grenada OECS Education Development Project seeks to increase equitable access to secondary education, improve the quality of the teaching and learning process, and strengthen management of the sector and the governance of the schools,” a press release from World Bank said.

     

    Among the improvements to be completed because of the funds are reading and mathematics training for teachers, equipment and instructional material upgrades, improving student support services such as counseling, and specialist training for school administrators.

     

    The Grenada OECS Education Development Project is merely one part of the 2002 multi-country Adaptable Program Loan with a focus on assisting the OECS.

     

    The US $8 million program primarily focuses on upgrading the quality of education in the sub-region and “strengthening the institutional management capacity of the education sector”.

     

    According to the release, Grenada’s portion of the education loan “has a grace period of 10 years and 35 years to maturity”.
