Parents urged to take hold of their children for the Yuletide season and beyond

(L-r) Minister responsible for Community Development on Nevis Hon. Hensley Daniel presents a fruit basket to Patron Ms. Myrna Webbe
CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (DECEMBER 10, 2008) -- Minister responsible for Community Development on Nevis Hon. Hensley Daniel pleaded to parents to commit to ensuring that their children take part in programmes tailored for youth development as they celebrate the 2009 Christmas season.

He sounded the call at the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Memorial Square in Charlestown on December 8, under the patronage of Ms. Myrna Webbe, a retired Nurse of Government Road.

“I want to urge your participation and your involvement for the simple reason that if we do this, we will be sure that the kinds of behaviour that leads to crime and drug abuse and violence will be eliminated or significantly reduced from our community,” he said.

Mr. Daniel noted that during the Christmas season, young people and children in all homes should be set on a path that would make the community proud of them.

Notwithstanding, the Minister also had words of advice for the public and recommended that they practice frugality, moderation and social graces during the season.

“All over the world we are having challenges with the economies and as we celebrate this Christmas let us do so in moderation, let us continue to live within our means and let us ensure that we have an enjoyable Christmas and that every time, let us ensure that we maintain good manners, respect and discipline for ourselves and for others. If we do that we will have a most enjoyable Christmas,” he said.

With regard to the Patron, Mr. Daniel said it was important to show appreciation to those who had worked hard and long in professions which involved the care of people and more so, a profession  which the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) had found it difficult to recruit young persons for.

“I trust as we make this presentation this evening and as we lift her up as an example to others, we will inspire young people to pursue careers in nursing.

“On Behalf of the Ministry of Community Development we say thanks to you for your tremendous contribution to the people of Nevis, for your tremendous contribution for nursing so many people back to good health. We say thank you and may God continue to bless you through this season and beyond,” he said and presented the Patron with a fruit basket and a Certificate of Appreciation.

Ms. Webbe shortly after flicked the switch to light the Christmas tree.  ~~Adz:Left~~

The evening saw a range of performances and included appearances from Brendon Claxton, the Bellevue Primary Boys Choir, the Charlestown Primary and Preparatory Schools, the Nevis Symphonic Band, the Wesleyan Choral Group, the Advent Minstrels, Kurvin Wallace and company and the Maranatha Choir.
