Rotary Club of Liamuiga demonstrates Rotary Cares

Rotarians replanting palms on Newtown Boulevard
Basseterre, St. Kitts - One of the benefits of being a Rotarian is serving the community. A series of community outreach activities in recent weeks have given the members of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga an opportunity to do just that.  Nearly half of its membership turned out a few Saturdays ago to re-plant the coconut trees on the Newtown Bay Road Boulevard after they were destroyed during the passage of Hurricane Omar just days before.

One of the first community projects undertaken by this 5 year old Club, the members replaced several of the uprooted trees and pruned a number of others, in an effort to restore the aesthetic appeal of the mile-long stretch of road.

The restoration work completed, two signs were placed on the extreme Eastern end of the Newtown Bay Road and another midway on the stretch of road informing that maintenance of the trees is the ongoing work of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga.

Senior Citizens enjoy National Hero's Day Luncheon

The next step is to repair the irrigation system which was part of the original project, the pipes for which have been broken and in some cases destroyed.

But community outreach activities are not limited to the city only.  Residents of the Saddlers Home for the elderly were treated to a sumptuous luncheon on National Heroes Day on September 16.

The meal which was prepared and served by Rotarians, was enjoyed by both residents of the home and a few members of the community, who by special invitation join us each year to celebrate the holiday.

The administrators of the senior citizens facility themselves look forward to our visit each year, admitting that they thoroughly enjoy the fellowship with our members.

Still to come on our outreach calendar, is the distribution of Christmas packages to the poor and indigent island wide.  Again, in a few weeks’ time, Rotarians would converge on communities around the island dropping off these goody baskets and offering Christmas cheer to those who need it most.  Indeed Rotary Cares!
