BASSETERRE St. Kitts, August 13th 2013 - One of the very important projects for the Rotary Club of St. Kitts for the year 2013 – 2014, The Dictionary Project, will be formally launched at the beginning of this academic school year.
The Dictionary Project will be executed in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Christophe Habour Foundation.
The Rotary Club of St Kitts intends to purchase 600 dictionaries and distribute them to each child enrolled in the 3rd grade in our public and private schools. This project will commence in St. Kitts and extend to Nevis. The exercise will be conducted at the beginning of the school year 2013-2014.
The Rotary Club of St. Kitts envisages this The Dictionary Project will address a reality that educators recognize: that until the third grade, students are learning to read, and beginning in the third grade, students are reading to learn. In this regard, the club and its partners see the gift of a dictionary as a very important gesture, providing each third grader with an additional tool to assist them as they transition into reading to learn.
According to the Rotary Club’s New Generations (Youth) Services Director, Mr Gordy Nicholls, what is very special about these Dictionaries, is they are specifically printed for the English Caribbean Islands. He noted that it is titled “A Student’s Dictionary & Gazetteer”. He described the special features of the dictionary. “The Dictionary is colorful, user-friendly for our Third Graders. The front and back cover of the dictionary depicts the flags of all the Caribbean Islands. The front inside cover highlights the logo of the Rotary Club of St Kitts, the logo of its contributing partner - The Christophe Harbour Foundation, as well as the Rotary International 4 way test:
Of the things We Think Say or Do:
- Is it the TRUTH?
- Is it FAIR to all concerned?
- Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
- Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Each 3rd Grader will have the opportunity to have a dictionary of their very own, with their name written in it. This is one of the many community projects in which the Rotary Club of St. Kitts gives back to the communities.
