BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – DESPITE heavy showers that threatened to derail the Friday (Dec. 12) evening proceedings, scores of supporters attended the official opening of the Labour Central Basseterre Constituency Office on the corner of Central and College Streets.

Labour Candidate for Central Basseterre Marcella Liburd and Prime Minister and Political Leader of the Labour Party Dr. the Hon. Denzil Douglas were also on hand to witness the event.

The night’s line-up featured several entertainment acts, including a salsa dance by the Santo Domingo group and modelling of different national dresses from around the Caribbean.

The highlight of the evening’s activities was the commemoration of past Constituency Two representatives, such as the Right Excellent Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, Anthony Riberio Errol Maynard and G.A. Dwyer Astaphan.

Surprisingly, Astaphan was a no-show for the event although Maynard was present and proxies of Bradshaw and Riberio were in attendance to receive awards commending the past and present representatives for their dedication and years of service to the people of the Constituency.

Liburd revealed that her platform would be centred on the theme ‘Stronger Families=Safer Communities’ and spoke passionately about her vision of the newly opened Office. ~~Adz:Right~~

“It is going to be a place where the rebuilding of families in the community can occur and where we can all bond together to become one family.

“It will be a place where children can come to do their homework, where adults can come to assist those children in their studies and a place where the community can come and be assured that there will be a listening ear or helping hand to pull them through whatever troubles they are experiencing,” she said.

Douglas echoed this sentiment, stating that he was confident that Liburd “would work diligently to ensure the sanity that has been lost is returned to the family structure”.

“Too often has the soil of this country been stained by the blood of our young people who are shooting and killing one another. My administration will rebuild our broken communities and redevelop St. Kitts as a peaceful place where we are once again our brothers’ keepers. [Liburd] has brought herself to you, the public, and given the opportunity she will serve your interests to the best of her abilities,” he stressed.

The Office was officially declared open with the cutting of the red ribbon cordoning off the building. Festivities then continued with food and drink being served while music from DJ Ronnie Rascal blared in the background.

The opening of the Central Basseterre Labour Office marks the third time in three months that the ruling St. Kitts Labour Party has opened such offices in preparation of the 2009 general elections, as Constituency Offices have recently been opened in Sandy Point and Old Road (Constituency Five and part of Constituency Four respectively).
