BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – INSTEAD of whiling away their Sunday on a bed or in front of the television, several persons chose to participate in ‘Hunting for History’, a treasure hunt organised by the St. Kitts National Youth Parliament Association (SKNYPA) and Positively Inclined.

The event began in Independence Square at 4:00 p.m. and finished at around 5:15 p.m. at the Cenotaph.

The designated route had the teams of two running all over Basseterre, going far west as the St. Kitts Bottling Company and far north as the Washington Archibald High School.

The clues were based on the history of the island and teams had to answer each puzzle correctly in order to move on to the next clue stop.

Teams were seen running furiously from stop to stop trying to maintain a competitive advantage over the other participants.

Jabez Harris of Bird Rock and Carlton Williams of Wade’s Garden were the winners and were awarded Digicel phones and vouchers from Sugar Klothing, Serendipity and Sensational Gift Shop.  ~~Adz:Right~~

Kazrano Gumbs of Ponds Extension and Duran Merchant of New Road placed second while Gabriella LaPlace of St. Peter’s and Berton Richards of Taylor’s Housing won the third place prize.

Each participant also received Caribbean Phone calling card and an EC$100 voucher at TDC.At the end of the Treasure Hunt, enthused players were heard expressing their pleasure at the event, deeming it an afternoon well-spent and commenting that activities such as these should be held on a regular basis.

“The hunt was an enlightening experience and it enabled me to learn more about Kittitian history. It’s good that so many young persons were able to find something constructive to do and I would encourage more people to enter whenever another one is held because it was a memorable afternoon,” said Williams.

Gumbs deemed the hunt was “challenging” and noted he appreciated the physicality of it, stating that “it was an excellent form of exercise and a good way to be active”.

President of Positively Inclined Ervin Welsh declared that he was “delighted to see how the Treasure Hunt turned out”, calling it “a move in a positive direction”.

“All participants indicated that they had fun and would definitely attend if we had another. It was a casual learning experience for us as organisers and for them as participants, but it was one that definitely warrants a repeat,” Welsh said.
