Charlestown Nevis (June 28, 2005) Nevis GIS Assistant Editor, Mrs. Mentrice Arthurton represented the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis at a one-day regional media workshop held on Saturday June 25, at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston Jamaica.
The workshop was held under the theme Learning Lessons from 2004 to Improve Coverage of Disasters in 2005 and catered for media workers from 15 territories, ranging from Bahamas in the north to Guyana in the south.
The media practitioners, print, television and radio had assembled to find solutions on how best to disseminate information before, during and after a disaster. The workshop covered several areas of which lessons from Hurricane Ivan was one of the major issues.
There were two presentations facilitated by personnel from CDERA and ODPEM on the expectation of the media/the role they should play before, during and after a disaster and how prepared the media is to deal with such disasters.
Sponsored by the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC), in association with Cable & Wireless, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA) and the Jamaica Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), a draft information kit for the Caribbean media was presented to each participant as a guiding technique, where the media could have a communication link between disaster managers and the general public.
