ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, August 20th 2013 – Authors from Antigua, Montserrat and St. Kitts read to a captive audience during The Reading Room held at The Best of Books on Antigua to close out the final day of Beyond the Screen on Saturday August 17, 2013.

Beyond the Screen was four days of workshops, movie screenings, readings and networking opportunities for authors, filmmakers and actors from around the region. They came to learn the basics of filmmaking and turning plays and books into movie scripts from Emmy award-winning director Neema Barnette and her husband Actor Reed McCants with the excellent support of Antigua’s leading filmmaker Howard Allen of HAMAFilms.

Beyond the Screen focused on authors and playwrights this year as part of its collaboration with the Antigua & Barbuda International Literary Festival, which is making a comeback after a two-year hiatus.

Starting off The Reading Room was Beyond the Screen co-host Nerissa Golden of Montserrat, who read poetry from her first book Truly Caribbean Woman’s Guide to Good Love and excerpts from The Making of a Caribbeanpreneur. She also shared two poems from her forthcoming children’s book Island Days, which is an illustrated collection of poetry of memories of growing up in the Caribbean. Golden answered questions from the audience about overcoming challenges and finding a place of self-love from which to build new and positive experiences.

The next reader was Antiguan author and dramatist Joy Lawrence who shared stories from her book Bethesda and Christian Hill our History and Culture which chronicles the building of the first slave school in the West Indies.

Featured author Carol Mitchell of St. Kitts read from two of the books in the Caribbean Adventure Series including the latest, Fury on Soufriere Hills. Mitchell said she would one day like to see Chee Chee become an animated television character for more children to enjoy. She also read from Seascapes which is a departure from her -focused stories for children and features unusual sea creatures from around the world.

New York-based author Monica Matthew brought the audience almost to tears as she recounted stories from her forthcoming book “The Candy Man” about the father she never knew. She was filled with praise for filmmaker Neema Barnette who had read her screenplay about the woman who raised her Mama Mae. Barnette said she looked forward to seeing the dynamic words turned into images to chronicle Matthew’s story of the woman who had ten children of her own but still took her home at the age of 19 months after her mother died.

Closing out the reading was general manager of The Best of Books Barbara Arrindell who read The Legend of Bats Cave, which tells the story of the wife of a governor who fell in love with a Kalinago (Caribs) chief after being abducted and taken through a cave ending up on a French island.

Many of the books featured at The Reading Room can be found at The Best of Books in Antigua or searching online at amazon.com.

Beyond the Screen was sponsored by the Antigua & Barbuda International Literary Festival, HAMAFilms, goldenmedia, Carib World Travel, City View Hotel, The Best of Books, Townhouse Furnishings and the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority.
