Charlestown Nevis (June 28, 2005) Vice President Networks Services, Cable & Wireless Cayman Islands, Mr. Albert Anderson said on Saturday June 25, that Cable & Wireless had taken the 2005 hurricane season to be one of grave concern as the company launches its hurricane campaign for the Caribbean region.
He was at the time addressing the opening ceremony of a one-day workshop held at the Pegasus Hotel in Jamaica for regional media workers. He said, With our hurricane preparedness campaign, called Be Prepared. We Care! we are encouraging our employees across the region to get prepared at home and at work.
He told the gathering that included the Director of Physical Planning, Jamaica, Mr. Delroy Coley, media stakeholders, members of CDERA and ODPEM that Cable & Wireless had taken note of lessons learnt from last years devastation of Hurricane Ivan in an effort to avoid some of the hardships, should a disaster strike again.
Anderson, who expressed his pleasure to be among distinguished members of the media from across the Caribbean, said that his company deemed the day to be very important and added, we believe that we all need to focus now more than ever on hurricane preparedness and what it really means.
In the aftermath, when some of us realized we had nothing left but life, employees of Cable & Wireless showed remarkable determination to keep their islands communicating. We needed to honour our many employees who had gone way beyond the call of duty to keep the companys networks across the region functioning under such difficult circumstances, commented Anderson.
The company partnered with the Caribbean Media Corporation and sponsored the workshop and aired a 13-episode television series called Storm Stories and produced an 80-page document entitled Heroes of Ivan as part of its educational campaign of disasters. A presentation of Heroes of Ivan was made to the Minister of Land and Environment, the Hon Dean Peart.
The campaign is to heighten the awareness of the impact disasters can have on the Caribbean as well as to strengthen Cable & Wireless passion to remain the best network in the region. It consists of the following programs; (i) Storm Stories, a 13 episode television series, (ii) Heroes of Ivan, an 80 page hard cover coffee table book celebrating the heroism and courage displayed by members of the community, (iii) Cable & Wireless Spirit to help employees prepare for the hurricane season and (iv) Hurricane Retail Offers the company will offer a special BMobile Hurricane Pack in stores.
The ceremony was chaired by Mr. Michael Whyte, Commercial and New Business Development Manager, Caribbean Media Corporation as well as Ms Pat Bynoe- Clarke, Head of Corporate Communication, Cable and Wireless Caribbean, while welcome remarks were given by Mr. Errol Clarke, Chief Operating Officer, Caribbean Media Corporation.
