St. Kitts native 22 year-old Micheleina Charles-Mills, currently pursuing a double major in Visual Arts and Communications Studies at the University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine says “I just love art. I could not see myself doing anything else.”

Mills began her education at the Washington Archibald High School and then moved on to the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College in 2003 where she pursued studies in the fields of Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Communication Studies, Caribbean Studies, Art and Sociology.

In 2005 she travelled to Trinidad to pursue a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in the fields of Art and Communication Studies.

“The best way to describe my UWI experience is ‘a blessing’. There have been the nights when I cried shamelessly about everything from boys to books to I don’t want to be here anymore,” said Mills in describing her tenure at UWI during an interview with SKNVibes.com.

She continued, “However, throughout the years I have developed a love for Trinidadian culture and Trinidadians. I left St. Kitts at the age of 19 and it’s been three years now. So a lot of who I am has been influenced within the Trinidadian context. Being at UWI has provided me with several opportunities to grow, to make mistakes and to learn from those mistakes.”

Mills’ ambitions have also grown during her tertiary stint and she now aspires to pursue studies in Intellectual Property upon completion of her first degree in September 2009.

“Intellectual property lawyers deal mostly with the creative industry. They deal with copyrights and legal representation of the artiste in various forums even at the United Nations (UN). I was really excited when I found out about World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO),” she said.  ~~Adz:Right~~

“I talk much more than I paint; so for today, I want to be both lawyer and artist. I want to have it all and live the best life.  I want to be the best Intellectual Property lawyer in the Caribbean and be able to extend to global forums to represent the arts and create meaning by fusing the arts as well as entertainment with regional development.”

Via this avenue Mills hopes to influence how young women see themselves and inspire young women to dream.

Mills encouraged young persons to search for their dreams rather than pursuing higher education simply as a means of attaining a higher salary.

“Tertiary education is for everyone, but it is for sure the easiest way to attain material trapping and the ideals of success. I would encourage youth to find their passion and in doing so find the thing or things that makes their smile come from the soul first. God is faithful and if you seek Him, He will delight in blessing you and your generations bountifully.”

It is not going to be an easy walk and it must cost you something to be with God. But as He compensated for His distress He will compensate you for your sacrifice,” she advised.
