BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – REPORTS reaching SKNVibes indicate that the effects of an earthquake were experienced earlier today (Aug. 24) by individuals within the Federation.
And investigations revealed that the quake occurred in the region of Antigua and Barbuda at about 7:52 a.m.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre http://www.emsc-csem.org, the tremor took place at 17.76°N and 61.62°W which is approximately 46.6miles north of St. Johns, Antigua and about 79.5 miles from Basseterre, St. Kitts.
The Centre lists the quake’s magnitude as being 4.5.
Interestingly, the last reported earthquake to have shaken the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis occurred on a Saturday, much like today, with its effects being felt at about 7:53 in the evening.
That May 18 quake also occurred near Antigua and Barbuda – 17.423°N 62.008°W – and measured 4.8 on the Richter Scale.
SKNVibes has received no reports of damage which resulted from today’s tremor.
This is the third reported earthquake experienced by the Federation in a four-month period.
