(June 28, 2005) -- Premier and Minister of Education and Library Services, the Hon Mr Vance Amory, has thanked an English couple that has assisted a public primary school build a stock of books to start a library.
Mr David Bulmer and his wife Margot, who have a second home at Morning Star, promised five years ago to give 100 books to St. Johns Primary School, to help them start a library. On Tuesday at a ceremony held at the school, they presented the last batch of 23 books, making it a total of 107 books.
Here you have some books, which Mr Bulmer and his dear wife have brought for you, which I am sure you will enjoy reading and which will help you to develop your mind and your love of things around you and also love of people because that is important, said Premier Amory to the pupils of the school.
According to Premier Amory, Mr Bulmer had been working diligently, having promised himself that he would assist St. Johns School with the establishment of a library through the provision of some very important books, which would be used by the students and enable them to develop their reading, mathematics, and science skills.
The ceremony, which was chaired by the schools principal Mr Carl Williams, was also attended by the education officer responsible for the school, Mrs Versalie Powell, and witnessed by all the pupils and their teachers. The Bulmers also donated over 60 pens that were presented to grade six students and teachers at the school.
The books that we have received so far have been very useful and very helpful in assisting both students and teachers in acquiring knowledge especially in the area of science and social studies, said Mr Williams. We have also gotten some religious literature as well, which we are very grateful for.
During the ceremony, 12-year old Dona Lee Bartlett was named the Most Improved Pupil in the school. As part of her prize, she will be taken for lunch by the Bulmers at the Four Seasons Resort next week. She was named the guest of honour at the ceremony, where she presented the donated pens to her classmates.

The Principal gave what it takes to be named the Most Improved Pupil: Very hard working student in grade six who would have excelled and someone who would have persevered, not necessarily the brightest student, but someone who would have worked very hard and who we feel that whatever gift they would have been given would motivate them. This year, that person is Dona Lee Bartlett.
