CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – RETIRED nurse Myrna Webbe was honoured by the Ministry of Social Development at the Nevis Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony held at the Memorial Square in Charlestown on Thursday, December 11.

She was presented a bouquet of flowers and commended by a number of officials, including Nevis’ Premier the Hon. Joseph Parry, for the contributions she has made to the island and its residents.

Premier Parry thanked Webbe for her contribution to nursing and referred to her as a shining example in the community and at the Alexandra Hospital where she had served for many years. He said she has worked her way up to Assistant Matron and had done an exceedingly good job.

Webbe was born to Susannah Robinson Forbes and Egbert Lee Webbe in the 1940s in Government Road, Charlestown, Nevis, a place where she still resides. Her early education began at the Charlestown Girls School and later the Charlestown Secondary School.

On graduating from that institution, Webbe entered the nursing profession in 1961. After her initial and additional training in this field, she was given the opportunity to advance her skills by attending a number of other training courses; one of which was a three-month Administrative Course in Barbados.

Webbe, who always spoke of her love for nursing, worked at the JNF Hospital in St. Kitts for five years, but would mostly be remembered for her numerous years spent at the Alexandra Hospital on Nevis where she worked until her retirement in 1999.

She was the President of the Nurses Association for many years, and because of her love for medicine and people she has never fully retired. Webbe is the Manager of the AVOLON Medical Laboratory; a position she has held from the inception of the medical facility in Nevis.  ~~Adz:Right~~

Webbe is a sport enthusiast and loves netball and tennis more than any other sports discipline. It is said that because of her love for the former, she founded the Nurses Netball Club.

Webbe is a member of the Charlestown Wesleyan Holiness Church and also an active member of the Choir and Children’s Ministry. During her spare time she enjoys baking, cooking and floral arrangements. She is also known to be an avid gardener.

The retired nurse is the living example of an individual whose life was well spent in the care for others, and today she continues by encouraging young persons to be gainfully occupied, to stay out of trouble and, most of all, to join the health fraternity, especially in the field of nursing.

The management and staff at the Department of Community Development extended their heartfelt gratitude to retired nurse Myrna Webbe for her outstanding contributions made to the development of Nevis.
