BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AS part of National Pride Week, a sub-theme for the twin-island Federation's 30th Independence Celebrations, the Department of Social Services and Community Development would be hosting a National Colours Competition.

The main theme for the commemoration of this year's Independence is ‘Stability, Creativity and Prosperity, Independence Thirty’. It would be a month-long celebration with weekly festivities held under different sub-themes for which everyone can participate.

Director of Social Development Azilla Clarke, at a press conference held at the ZIZ Studio yesterday (Aug. 27), explained the guidelines for the competition as well as encouraged all to display their colours and take part in the event.

"We are encouraging Kittitians to use the National colours in a creative way to depict - to dress their hair, makeup, nails, shoes - everything about them in an effort to display their pride for St. Kitts and Nevis.

"We are asking that the pictures in your National colours be taken during the particular week and posted to the Facebook page and other medium and the general public as well, as some key stakeholders will be able to judge for composition, creativity etc.," she stated.

The categories are Sunday Best; Creative Wear; Business Attire; Tiny Tots, which is geared towards children 12 and under; Teen Sensation, which is geared towards teenagers who would like to express their creativity; Oldie Goldie, which encourages senior citizens to "dig deep into their closets" and display their creative side as well.

Additionally, Personal Grooming Awards are for the "divas in St. Kitts and Nevis that do the hair, the makeup, the jewellery, the shoes and make themselves look stellar"; and the National Dress Day, where persons are asked to put their own personal touch to the tradition National Dress.

Clarke said that the competition is for persons to come out in their National colours and show off their creative side, noting that the Federation has one of the most outstanding flags in the world.

"This is a way for us not only show the creativity of St. Kitts and Nevis but also the pride of our colours. St. Kitts and Nevis has been prided to have one of the most beautiful flags in the entire world and we can show how we can mix and match these colours and make our outfits just stand out."

The National Colours Competition falls under the National Day of Prayer themed week which would run from September 15 to 21.
