Cake Competition to be held for Independence 30

By: Jenise Ferlance, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - BAKERS of all experiences are invited to enter a Cake and Cupcake Competition that will be held as part of the Federation's 30th Independence Day celebrations.

Giving the details of the Competition at a Press Conference yesterday (Aug. 27) at the ZIZ Studio was Azilla Clarke, Director of Social Development.

She said the Competition seeks persons to "create the most decadent tasting and designed cakes using our national colours and our national designs".

"We are looking to be wowed that day and come in and meet a Pelican and the Poinciana and images of St. Kitts and Nevis, your flag. Everything that you know to be uniquely St. Kitts and Nevis - the Silver Jubilee Stadium, the airport - whatever you can bake and create, we are asking you to enter that competition.

"It will be twofold, in that there would be the technical judging at the display site. You would bring your premade cake to the site to decorate and then the judges will judge you there and then. They will be taken to the National Arts Festival for the general public to then vote, using secret ballots on which cake they like to see. There won't be a chance to taste it, the tasting is only for the technical persons...," Clarke explained.

She invited all bakers, whether they are experienced or not, to enter the Competition as there are attractive cash and other prizes to be won.

The Competition rules and guidelines state that the Competition is open to all citizen, nationals and residents of the twin-island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis 12years of age and older. It is geared towards cake decorators, pastry chefs as well as bakers.

There are three categories: Master bakers and pastry chefs, which targets persons with over five years of experience and training; Experienced bakers and pastry chefs, which is geared towards those  with three to five years of training and experience; and Novice bakers and pastry chefs, those individuals who have no formal training and little experience.

For the Cake Competition, participants would be asked to create any decorated patriotic celebration cake covered with sugar paste or royal icing for a formal occasion. Exhibits must have a piped inscription with a minimum of 12 letters/figures indicating the patriotism being depicted.

For the Cupcake Competition, participants would be expected to create a display of cupcakes that include patriotic designs and the road to Independence. The design should also include a pastillage plaque stating significance of symbolism to Independence and the country.

Cakes should be covered in suitably edible material and be creatively displayed. The display must be of 12 cupcakes and contain no more than two decorative styles and flavour.

Points would be awarded for taste and texture, overall appearance, artistic presentation and originality, use of colour, difficulty of techniques, and neatness of cake covering and decorations for a total of 100 points.

Entry forms are expected to reach the Department of Social Services and Community Development on Victoria Road by September 6 at 4:00 p.m., as no late entry forms would be accepted.

Each participant would receive a Participation Certificate for competing.
