BASSETERRE, ST. Kitts - PRIME MINISTER of St. Kitts and Nevis the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas yesterday (Aug. 28) at his Monthly Press Conference disclosed that his government is close to offering a salary increase to civil servants.
“We continue to say, as the situation improves fiscally, we would want the public servants and the country on a whole to benefit from them. We in the public service in particular had asked our public servants to tighten their belts.
“We are still committed. We are close in fact to finalising our plans with regard to that. I shall make at the appropriate time in the very, very near future I will make the appropriate statement pertaining to that.”
He added that his administration is determined to fulfil its obligations and give those in the public service a little more spending power.
“We will fulfil our obligation to review the salaries and thus allow our people to have a little more spending power to those who work in the public service and those who are pensioners who have served.
“We had asked them to forgo for the last two years increase in their emoluments by not taking increments and they understood. They know things are improving because they work the system.”
Last month, Dr. Douglas, at a political rally, promised government workers in St. Kitts and Nevis an increment on their salaries.
“Let me tell you all something. You are getting $320…that is minimum wage, but just on Wednesday my Cabinet has said the time to review salaries and wages is now.
“It ain’t only the PEP attendees that going get pep in dey step; the civil servants as well. They going get pep in dey step because we believe that this is a movement of the people. We gotta move! We gotta move up! We gotta move forward! And so we want everybody in this country to be pepping in their steps,” PM Douglas said whilst on the political platform.
