BRONX, New York, August 25th 2013 - Sandy Point Benevolent Society (SPBS) is at it again! In a few days, that is, on Saturday,31st August, 2013 during the annual US Labor Day weekend festivities, the SPBS, a Sandy Point High School alumni association will host its Third Annual Benefit Gala in New York City. From all reports, the impressive Eastwood Manor Banquet Hall, 371 Eastchester Road, Bronx, NY will reverberate with energy and enjoyment from 8pm to 2am on that day, as scores of nationals from the twin island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis resident at home and abroad are expected to attend this GALA affair.
With Brimstone Hill National Park Fortress and Harowe Servo Control as the premier sponsors for 2013 benefit gala, event bears the theme, ‘Recognising and Celebrating Excellent Role Models for our Youth” and would see several accomplished citizens of the Federation of St. Kitts- Nevis taking the spotlight. The banquet will be held under the distinguished patronage of Sir Hugh and Lady Rawlins, Retired Chief Justice of the Caribbean Supreme Court. Many on the SPBS executive team remember Sir Hugh as a dynamic teacher of History at the SPHS.
Delivering the featured presentation would be St. Kitts- born Dr. Spencer Eugene Amory who currently serves as the Jose M. Ferrer Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Columbia University College Physicians and Chief of General Surgery at the Columbia University Medical Center, New York.
Also sharing the spotlight will be local calypsonian Richie Buntin who will sing the Federation’s National Anthem, and the distinguished honorees who are household names in the federation and the diaspora. The honorees are the civic organization SPIRIT (Sandy Pointers Inspiring Real Improvements Throughout), renowned educator and calypsonian Singing Jackie, and the legendary past principal of Sandy Point High School, Mr. W. Vincent Hodge.
An aspect of this year’s banquet that has generated much interest is the announcement of the winner of the inaugural SPBS scholarship recipient. Since the last banquet, the group launched a annual scholarship of US $1000 to support the academic pursuits of alumni of the SPHS/ CEMSS in tertiary institutions.
A spokesman for the organization said that its members are on a mission to ensure a sold-out event of at least 300 guests. The $90.00 cost per ticket will allow attendees an all-night open bar, free entry in door prize drawings, trinkets customized with the national colors of St. Kitts and Nevis and a complimentary souvenir magazine printed in celebration of 2013 Gala Event. DJ Re-Mix International will provide the musical accompaniment for the evening and will keep attendees rocking especially for the dance that follows the presentation of awards.
