BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, August 29th 2013 (SKNIS) - Persons in the field of education have been congratulated for their commitment and hard work that resulted in the highest passing grades in the last four years, by students that sat the June 2013 CXC exams. So, it’s probably fitting that the upcoming commemoration of education week will bear the theme “Commitment to Excellence.” 

A number of activities have been planned for the September 7 to 14 which is designed to give the public an opportunity to learn more about the Ministry of Education and its staff, as well as the partners who contribute to the development of the nation’s youth population.

“When people think about education they only think about teachers, they only think about schools but there is so much more,” said Education Officer Lisa Pistana, while appearing on this week’s edition of SKNIS Perspectives. “There are so many different units and departments contained within the Ministry of Education and we really want persons to get an understanding, a comprehensive look at us.” 

“We also want to give ourselves, ... along with our education partners and stakeholders, an opportunity to talk about some of those real issues within education and to help us plan for the way forward,” Mrs. Pistana added.

The activities for the week are designed to achieve this. It begins on Saturday, September 07, with a fitness walk from Independence Square to Frigate Bay at 6 p.m. The following day officials will worship at the Zion Moravian Church at 9:30 a.m. On Monday, September 09, stakeholders in education will participate in a round table discussion under the official theme “Commitment to Excellence” with a sub-theme “Building Leaders for the Future Advancement of the Federation.”

A panel discussion on “The Pros and Cons of Creating a Testing Society” takes place on Tuesday, September 10. The event will be broadcasted live on ZIZ television at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, dubbed Education Pride Day, will see the ministry, schools and other partners open their doors to the public via open house format. The next day is the Ministry of Education Olympics, where staff members and educators will contest various sporting events at the Warner Park Football Stadium in a fun filled atmosphere. An exhibition will be mounted on Friday, at Independence Square from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Brochures and information along with representatives from a number of entities will be featured. 

Education Week 2013 culminates on Saturday, September 14 with the Ministry of Education’s Awards Ceremony. Awards will be presented to current and retired employees in education whether they are administrator, teachers, school meals cook or other types of ancillary staff members.

Forms are available at various banks and at the Ministry of Education on Church Street for persons wishing to nominate a prospective candidate.

Mrs. Pistana encouraged residents to join the celebrations.

“We are saying to each and everyone, one and all to come on out, join us on the different event days,” she said. “Be a part of our education system. Whether you have a child [in school] or not by extension, you are a part of us and we welcome you in to celebrate this wonderful time with us.”
