Basseterre, St. Kitts (June 29, 2005): The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UTS-CariGlobe is crediting the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis for its liberalization policy of the telecommunications industry.
During an interview with SKNIS, Clecton Phillip stressed that the actions of government go a long way to empower nationals a key goal outlined by Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas.
I really want to commend the initiative of the government in the liberalization process particularly in the bold step ... to empower locals such as me, he disclosed. Weve (UTS-CariGlobe) proven that we can deliver and governments decision to empower & locals in this dynamic and growing industry was well thought and was the correct thing to do.
The CEO referred to the June 18 launch of UTS-CariGlobe and described it as tremendous. We have done quite well in our first week, he said. We have a steady stream of customers coming in and signing up with us and we are quite happy at this particular point. Our subscriber base is growing and growing rapidly.
Phillip noted that interconnectivity issues between his company and the other cellular service providers will be normalized shortly. We have one interconnect agreement so far and that is with Cable and Wireless. The circuits between UTS-CariGlobe and Cable and Wireless have been established and we are now passing traffic. He revealed that full interconnectivity is expected later this week.
Mr. Phillip explained how the addition of his company will impact the local telecom market.
Liberalization brings benefits to everybody. The consumers (gain from) better service quality, more innovations, better pricing and better customer service, he disclosed. From the operators standpoint they are forced to become more efficient, more innovative and timely in the delivery of goods and services. Regulators (are also now) challenged to establish a regime that meets the changing needs of the market and the technology and the providers, Mr. Phillip concluded.
UTS-CariGlobe is the third cellular service provider to operate within St. Kitts and Nevis. It entered a market already occupied by Cable and Wireless and Cingular Wireless.
