St. Peter’s resuscitates Community Football League

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AFTER years of dormancy, the St. Peter’s Community’s Football League was resuscitated yesterday (Aug. 31) by the St. Peter’s Football Club.  

     

    The event also saw five teams that are expected to participate in the tournament competing against each other in a Soccerama at the St. Peter’s Playfield following the Opening Ceremony.
     
    Speaking at the Ceremony, Minster of Sports Hon. Glen Phillip expressed pleasure at seeing the rekindling of the League and expressed that the club has the full support of his Ministry in that endeavour.

    The Minister added that he feels the League is a golden opportunity to identify new talent and predicted success for the club in the Premier Division in the near future although they would face many challenges.

    “It is only a matter of time before you can emulate the success of neighbours Conaree. Up hill travel in Monkey Hill is not new to you,” he said.

    The Minister applauded the hard work of the organisers and claimed that football has the potential to unite the community.

    Phillip also declared the Tournament open.
     
    St. Peter’s FC President Cedric Liburd stated that a football league in St. Peter’s would strengthen the sports discipline in the community, and he encouraged all the players to use the opportunity to develop their football skills.

    He also highlighted some of the great players from St. Peter’s involved in football, such as Orville ‘Sailor’ Thompson, Atiba Harris and Khyron Phillip.

    SKNFA’s President Anthony Johnson congratulated the organisers for not only having the idea but also for their execution of the plan.

    Anthony added that he sees the importance of the League and it should act as a breeding ground for new talent. He also urged the players to take the Tournament seriously.

    Parliamentary Representative for the area, Eugene Hamilton hailed the St. Peter’s Football Club and stated that the Tournament would inspire a new direction and a new spirit in the community for football.

    He also stated that he has seen and enjoyed the star-quality players of the area and that the reintroduction of the League is an opportunity to hone their skills and to aspire for greatness.  

    Six teams is said to have been registered for the League which got underway today (Sept. 1) at 5:00 p.m.
