Press Release

BRADES, Montserrat, September 2nd 2013 – Residents of Montserrat will have the opportunity this Saturday, September 7, 2013 to see the Oscar-nominated film Beast of the Southern Wild at the Montserrat Cultural Centre.

Director Benh Zeitlin will be on island to screen the film as well as pursue discussions with the Montserrat Development Corporation and other entities about the possibility of filming here.

MDC CEO Ivan Browne said he was pleased that Montserrat has attracted the attention of this award-winning filmmaker and this also opens another avenue for the island to market itself as a location for filming the next international blockbuster in the same way Dominica has done with Pirates of the Caribbean.

Since the onset of volcanic activity, the Government of Montserrat has been facilitating inquiries about filming documentaries and other productions here. Browne said this interest should be pursued with all of the relevant agencies, including the Disaster Management Coordination Agency (DMCA), as many of the inquiries are to film in the Exclusion Zone.

Beast of the Southern Wild tells the story through the eyes of Hushpuppy, a six-year-old girl who exists on the brink of orphanhood.

Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary imagination, she believes that the natural order is in balance with the universe until a fierce storm changes her reality. Desperate to repair the structure of her world in order to save her ailing father and sinking home, this tiny hero must learn to survive unstoppable catastrophes of epic proportions.

The film was nominated for four Academy Awards at the 85th Academy Awards, in the categories Best Picture, Best Director (Benh Zeitlin), Best Adapted Screenplay (Lucy Alibar, Benh Zeitlin), and Best Actress (Quvenzhané Wallis). At age 9, Wallis became the youngest Best Actress nominee in history.

The film is rated PG-13 and will be shown free of charge at 7pm. Mr. Zeitlin will be available for a talkback session following the screening.
