BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AS part of its ongoing community outreach efforts, the St. Kitts National Youth Parliament Association (SKNYPA) is holding a Toy Drive during the month of December.

Collected items will be sent to the Haitian Children’s Home in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.
According to Organiser and SKNYPA Member Clauja Bradshaw, the initiative is designed to provide some sort of comfort to the struggling Haitian population.

“The current situation in Haiti is really awful; what with the storms and the hurricanes increasing the negative conditions that the Haitian people are forced to endure.

“The Toy Drive is an effort to let the Haitian children know and feel that there are other people out there who care about them and their well-being. We know that some people may say that sending toys isn’t as important as sending food, but anything that we can do to help those children and offer them relief is a good thing,” she stressed.~~Adz:Right~~

Bradshaw added that the project was part of SKNYPA’s mandate to positively affect the lives of not just the people of St. Kitts, but also Caribbean neighbours who were experiencing tough times.

“It’s important that we reach out and connect with other countries because it reinforces the idea of one Caribbean,” she stated.
Boxes will be placed in the major supermarkets including RAMS, ValuMart and C&C from next week. Persons interested in making direct donations can contact Bradshaw at 667-9100.

Toys can be both new and used, and of varying shapes and sizes, as long as they are in a reasonable condition and do not constitute a danger to small children.

The Toy Drive will close on Wednesday, December 31 and the toys will be shipped to Haiti by mid-January. Bradshaw encouraged the general public to donate toys and “to make a child’s smile brighter this Christmas”.
