BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, September 11th 2013 - The leadership of the National Integrity Party (NIP) calls on Prime Minister the Dr. the Right Hon. Denzil Llewellyn Douglas and his Labour Party-led Administration to bestow our Nation’s highest honour of National Hero on Dr. the Right Hon. Sir Kennedy Alphonse Simmonds, Dr. Simeon Daniel, and Markus of the Woods.
The NIP believes that Sir Kennedy, Dr. Daniel and Markus of the Woods deserve to be fully recognized for their contribution to the development of St. Kitts and Nevis. These great men have inspired generations of Kittitians and Nevisians through their sacrifice and outstanding service to our nation.
Sir Kennedy has the distinct honour of being our Nation’s first prime minister, having led St. Kitts and Nevis into independence on 19th September, 1983. Dr. Simeon Daniel also has the distinct honour of being Nevis’ first premier on that same date.
Markus of the Woods, a runaway slave who rebelled against the cruel treatment of plantation slavery, helped to inspire others to fight for their freedom during the 1830’s.
The names of these men deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as our Nation’s first national hero, His Right Excellent Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, Sir Caleb Azariah Paul Southwell and Sir Joseph Nathaniel France.
The NIP also calls for the establishment of a National Heroes Park where citizens can pay homage to their heroes and also showcase them to the world.
Therefore, on this our 30th Anniversary of Independence, let us pray tribute to our national heroes. Let us honour those who fought to make St. Kitts and Nevis a better place.
