BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE young man, who on Friday (Dec. 19) was shot by the police in Newtown during a search for illegal drugs, arms and ammunition, reportedly attacked and assaulted an officer with a hammer.

According to a police press release, while members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force were executing a search warrant on the premises of Samuel ‘Chicken’ Walters of Herbert Street, Newtown, 18-year-old Gibson Blake ran from the house by jumping through a window with a hammer in his hand.

“The officers outside the house ordered him to stop. He continued running in the direction of the officers and assaulted one of them with the hammer. As a result, he was shot in an effort to prevent injury to the officer,” the release said.

SKNVibes was at the scene after Blake was shot and observed when a unit of the Emergency Medical Services was taking him to the JNF General Hospital, where he was treated and detained. ~~Adz:Right~~

The release also noted that nothing illegal was found on Walters’ premises to satisfy the warrant.

The police, however, in the release, contradicted what Walters told SKNVibes on the day of the incident.

Walters said he was in his home watching TV while Blake, who had minutes before exited the bathroom, was sitting on a bed. He added that he heard loud banging and rattling sounds on the door to his home, which caused the safety device to be undone, leaving the door open.

He said a number of officers entered his home, pointed their guns at him and demanded he did not move. Walters further said he was ordered to move to another room, and at that moment Blake attempted to get away from the scene by jumping through a nearby window. He however did not mention that the teenager had a hammer in his hand.

Walters added that shortly after Blake exited his home, he heard the sound of gunfire and later found that the youth was shot.
