BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, September 13th 2013 (SKNIS) - ‘Much food for thought’ was the way in which the palette received at the 15th annual Prime Minister’s Independence Lecture Series was described on Wednesday evening at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank.
Speaking to a packed crowd at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium, the featured speaker His Excellency Dr. Kevin M. Isaac, St. Kitts and Nevis’ High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, said he saw the 30th anniversary of Independence as a “signal moment for us to rise to the opportunities and challenges of our time to honour the work and sacrifices of those men and women who came before us and on whose shoulders we stand today.”
In keeping with the theme of the evening, “Stability, Creativity and Prosperity,” the High Commissioner urged the young people especially, to explore the history of the many failed attempts at unionization in this region and to recognize that the union between St. Kitts and Nevis as a Federation is working, having achieved thirty (30) years of independence together as one nation.
The High Commissioner added that there are undoubtedly still a number of challenges that need to be addressed in the country, but lauded praise on the government and people of the Federation for proving that in spite of being the smallest independent state in the Eastern Caribbean, this country has risen soundly to the challenge of much educational, social and infrastructural development.
In response to the feature address, youthful Azard Gumbs agreed with several of the sentiments expressed by the High Commissioner and enunciated that in spite of the few misguided youth who employ negative behaviour, the majority of youth in St. Kitts and Nevis are right thinking and desirous of extending productive service to this their land of birth.
Mrs. Delcia Bradley-King, also a respondent to the feature address, reiterated the seriousness of the challenges that this country still faces and sharpened the audience’s attention to taking the responsibility of nationhood seriously.
