BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A young man this morning (Dec. 25) luckily escaped serious injuries after the vehicle he was driving overturned and crashed into a lamp pole at the junction of Buckley’s Estate Road and the Island’s Main Road in St. Kitts.

On arrival at the scene, SKNVibes learnt that McKeun Isaac, a Private in the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force, was driving a black Ford Explorer (PA3799) along the Island’s Main Road on his way to Camp Springfield at about 11:05 a.m. when the accident occurred.

“I was asked by another soldier to take a married couple from OTI to their residence. After doing so I drove to my home at West Street, Newtown to check on a stove that was giving some problems.

“On my way back to Camp Springfield I saw a friend at Bakers Corner and he asked me to take him home in Camps. After dropping him off, I resumed my journey to Camp Springfield and was driving within the speed limit along the Island’s Main Road.

“However, while coming down the slope in the vicinity of Buckley’s Estate Road, the vehicle started to sway.

I tried to control it but something seemed to have gone wrong with the steering; so I held on to the steering wheel and applied the brakes and the vehicle overturned on its right side, hit a lamp pole, skidded for some distance and came to a halt on the right side of the road leading to Buckley’s Estate,” the soldier said.

The vehicle is owned by the soldier who asked Isaac to take the married couple to their residence.

Droplets of blood were seen on Isaac’s clothing caused by a minor injury to one of his fingers. He also indicated that he suffered minor bruises to his feet.

The vehicle was extensively damaged and the lamp pole, which broke and fell across the Island’s Main Road and had caused a diversion in traffic, was quickly removed on arrival of members of the Electricity Department who were assisted by some bystanders.

Commenting on the accident, one bystander said the soldier was very fortunate to have escaped with minor injuries and “if he never knew God, he should get on his knees and give Him thanks and praise from this day onward”.
