BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Traffic Department of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has released a number of traffic restrictions that are to be implemented for the J’Ouvert, street jamming activities and shows for the 2008/2009 Carnival Festivities.

In an exclusive interview, Head of the Traffic Department, Inspector Venetta Wyatt revealed that no parking would be allowed along the route that the parades will flow on the days of J’Ouvert celebrations and other organised street activities.

Tomorrow’s J’Ouvert session, according to Wyatt, would begin at Wigley Avenue, flow eastward along Cayon Street, down West Independence Square Street, across South Independence Square Street, up East Independence Square Street, along Pond Road, through Sandown Road, west along the Bay Road, up Fort Street and west along Cayon Street.

She reiterated that no parking would be allowed along these streets, noting that this restriction is also to the benefit of vehicle owners as it would greatly reduce the possibility of their vehicles being damaged during the celebrations.

“No persons should park along the route, especially in the area of the Independence Square. The roads there are especially narrow and if any vehicles are parked there, there is the possibility that they can be damaged and we don’t want that.” ~~Adz:Right~~

The Inspector said parking would be allowed along the Bay Road, with the exception of that portion between West Independence Square and Fort Streets.

Regarding shows that will be held at Carnival Village, the Inspector said no parking would be allowed along that part of Victoria Road which stretches from the Lozack Road to the gate of the Basseterre High School (BHS). She said unlike the regular practice, traffic would be allowed to flow only northwards along Victoria Road and at Lozack Road; traffic would be allowed to flow only eastward.

“Parking will be permitted on the Basseterre High School grounds but this is limited. You must, however, present a pass before you are allowed to part in that area,” she added.

The Traffic Head told SKNVibes that restrictions for the shows would take effect from approximately 6:00 on the evening of each scheduled event.

“Persons who fail to adhere to these restrictions will have to deal with the consequences.  We are hoping that we don’t have to give anyone any tickets, but if we have to we will,” she warned.
