BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A female resident of Frigate Bay was on Thursday (Sept. 19) transported to the JNF General Hospital for medical treatment after she was attacked by two vicious dogs.

According to a police report, initial investigation revealed that while Lucina Charles was on her way on foot to visit a friend in Frigate Bay, she was attacked by two dogs of unknown breed.

The report did not state how many times she was bitten or which part of her anatomy needed treatment. It however noted that it is an offence for a person to own a dog, four months and over, without it being licenced.

The report states: “The general public is asked to pay attention to the following important information from the Dogs (Licensing and Control) Act, No. 10 of 2007.

“A person who keeps a dog or kennel without obtaining a license commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding three hundred dollars, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one month or both.

“A dog that is four (4) months old or over shall be licensed by its owner, failure to do so the owner commits and offence.”

The report also states that  “a person  who  owns  or keeps  a dog  shall  keep  that  dog properly   secured on  his/her private  premises so as to prevent the escape of the dog into any public area  or onto the property of another person. Failure to do so the owner commits an offence and is  liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding two hundred and fifty dollars or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one month, or both”.

The police have also provided a list of dogs that are considered dangerous.
