Fire and Rescue winners of Independence T20 Competition

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FIRE and RESCUE are the winners of the inaugural Haynes Smith Cricket Club Independence T20 Competition following their victory in a close encounter against the Guyanese Young Guns in the Final played yesterday ( Sept. 22) at the Lime Kiln Playfield.

     

    Fire and Rescue won the toss, batted first and scored 121 all out off 17.3 Overs.  

    Steve Liburd top scored with 40, while young Cameron Pennyfeather played a cameo 26 not out.

    Bowling for the Guyanese Young Guns, Bernard Island took five wickets for 20 runs, Larry Edwards two for 25 and Larry Audain two for 26.

    In reply Young Guns reached 118 for 7 in an exciting run chase that went right down to last ball of their allotted 20 overs, with them needing four runs to win from the final delivery. 

    They however failed to score a run from that ball and fell short of the target score.

    Jatin Patel top scored with 22 while Sherman Whyte contributed 15. 

    Bowling for Fire and Rescue, Al Richards collected two wickets for 18 runs and was ably supported by Sylvester Otto who claimed two scalps for 28.

    Fire and Rescue won by 3 Runs and became the first winner of the Haynes Smith Cricket Club T20 Independence Competition.

    Steve Liburd of Fire and Rescue received the trophy for the Most Runs (211) in the Competition while Bernard Island of Young Guns copped the trophy for the Most Wickets (7). 

    Umpires were Steadroy Techeira and Rudolph Wattley.

    Speaking after the game, Liburd claimed that he was happy to grab the award and that 200 runs in three innings is a huge achievement.

    “It was pretty exceptional...three T20 innings with over 200 runs! I am pretty happy with that.”

    He also hailed his team’s overall performance.

    “The overall team performance, we saw some young guys stepping up to the plate and the overall performance was pretty good.”

    Young Guns captain Bernard Island stated that the team needs to prepare better for future tournaments. 

    “We have to practice more so that the guys can be better prepared for future tournaments and we don’t make the same mistakes.”
