BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - WITHIN early seconds of the performed song, all four judges had turned around their chairs to behold the talented Jamaican songstress, 28-year-old Tessanne Chin, during Tuesday night’s (Sept. 24) second blind audition episode of The Voice aired on NBC.
Tessanne Chin, who was the final contestant on this particular episode which saw over nine contestants, literally gave a show-stopping performance belting out ‘Try’ by popular US Pop Rock singer, Pink.
On the Emmy Award-winning show, the celebrity judges, who are all voice coaches, do not have prior knowledge of who the contestants are...thus ‘blind audition’.
These competitors emerge onstage whilst the judges chairs are turned aback of them.
If a particular contestant impresses a judge, then a red button, affixed on each individual chair, is pressed; turning the judge to actually see who the contestant is and, of course, further enjoy that performance.
For season five, Voice coaches Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green have returned in the seats of their midseason replacements, Usher and Shakira, and are now reunited with Blake Sheldon and Adam Levine.
Furthermore, on The Voice, it is up to the contestant to choose which one of the four judges who turns around during his or her performance that he or she would like to be their voice coach throughout the competitions in hopes of winning.
In many instances, there is a toss-up with regards to how many judges turn around during the performances and sometimes none do.
Hence, to get all four judges to turn around is a very big deal on a show of that nature.
Although all of the judges were individually eager to be chosen by Tessanne Chin, when it came down to her announcement, it was the lead singer of the popular American Pop Rock band called Maroon 5, Adams Levine.
In comments leading to her picking a voice coach, Tessanne Chin remarked: “I’m a fan of music...period. I just want to be the best vocalist. I'm very interested in learning how I can better evolve, and for me personally I think I'm gonna go with Adam.”
Whilst praising the singing talent that she possesses before the Jamaican songstress made her decision, Adam highlighted that Reggae is his favourite type of music.
“My favourite music comes from where you're from...Reggae music is the greatest thing in the world to me”, to which Tessanne Chin replied, “Aw, thank you. That’s a big honour.”
He added: “It would have been a mistake of a lifetime not to turn around for you. You got something crazy special...”
Adam had further expressed confidence in her ability to outshine the other competitors saying, “You could easily win The Voice this year. I don’t have a doubt in my mind.”
Tessanne Chin is a past performer of the annual St. Kitts Music Festival having made her debut performance here in 2007.
She was slated to return this year after the initial line-up was publicised. However, she was replaced by well-known Jamaican Reggae and Dancehall artiste Christopher Martin due to schedule conflict.
A lot of people are familiar with Tessanne Chin’s music, including popular songs such as ‘Hide Away’, ‘Broken Melody’, ‘Messenger’ and also ‘Never Let Me Go’ featuring Shaggy.
Blind auditions for season five of The Voice continues on Monday at 8:00 ET/PT on NBC.
