BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SIX-TIME Calypso Monarch and engineer Konris Maynard was announced as the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party’s (SKNLP) candidate for St. Christopher Three.

According to a press release, the West Basseterre Constituency Branch of the SKNLP on Monday (Sept. 23) had announced that a special meeting would be held on Thursday (Oct. 3) at the Twilight Zone Conference Hall, located at the Lime Kiln Industrial and Commercial Park, to introduce Maynard as the Labour Party’s candidate for the area.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

One of the Branch’s officials, Terry Williams, explained that the meeting would be held specifically to give Maynard an opportunity to formally introduce himself to the constituents, share his vision for the Constituency and to thank all concerned for the confidence reposed in him to become the next Parliamentary Representative for that Constituency.

“In July the National Executive of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party through its Candidate Selection Process, approved the nomination of Maynard who is an Electrical and Computer Engineer and the undefeated reigning six times crowned Calypso King of the Federation. From as early as the first week in September, Maynard, of West Basseterre's Mattingley Heights, had been actively meeting and greeting residents throughout the length and breadth of St. Christopher #3,” the release reads.

The communities of Constituency Number Three include Palmetto Point, West Farm, Boyd’s, Mattingley, Camps, Buckley’s, Lime Kiln, Trafalgar, St. Johnson’s Village, Cardin Avenue, La Guerite and a section of Shadwell.

And in a release from the Communications Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister (CUOPM), Prime Minister and Leader of the SKNLP the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas last evening (Sept. 26) welcomed his party’s statement of Maynard’s formal introduction to the constituents.

Maynard replaces former Deputy Prime Minister the Hon. Sam Condor as the SKNLP’s candidate for that Constituency.

On January 30, 2013, Condor had resigned from the Cabinet of the Federal Government, claiming that the decision was made because of “the recent developments pertaining to issues of good governance and constitutional integrity”.

He however vowed to remain committed to serving the people of Christopher Three and had claimed he was praying that God would bless and guide the Federation.

“I remain committed to serve and to do the best that I can for the people of St. Christopher Three and of the nation in general, by the grace of God and by the will of the people. I pray that God would continue to bless and guide our country, so that we would emerge from this unchartered path with a fresh vision for living as brethren and working together in respectful harmony, for the good of all.”

Condor’s resignation came five days after PM Douglas announced that he had stripped Dr. Timothy Harris of his ministerial portfolios because of his open opposition to two recent government-sponsored Bills, his refusal to say he would vote on the Budget and on the No Confidence Motion filed by the Opposition, as well as his apparent involvement in activism that undermined the government.

Since then, the two former ministers have formed the People’s Labour Party, with Harris as Leader and Sam his Deputy.

Further, the PLP has merged with the People’s Action Movement and the Concerned Citizen’s Movement to form a Unity Partnership, which was officially launched last evening (Sept. 26) at Greenlands Park with Harris as its Leader and Nevis’ Deputy Premier Mark Brantley and PAM’s Shawn Richards as Deputy Leaders.

It therefore means that SKNLP’s Konris Maynard will be going up against PLP’s Sam Condor in the upcoming General Elections for the St. Christopher Three seat.
