BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - OVER 17 members of the Constituency Eight Young Labour Movement and a number of residents of St. Peter’s Parish on Saturday morning (Sept. 28) participated in the painting of the bus Stop in Parray’s Village, St. Peter’s, as a kick start to a beautification project throughout the Constituency.
The new St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Candidate for Constituency Eight, Dr. Terrance Drew, also helped to paint and clean up the surrounding area.
This particular bus stop is found in the vicinity of the St. Peter’s Playfield and the St. Peter’s Community Centre.
This media house visited the area prior to the painting of the bus stop and had found graffiti on the walls.
Later that day, and following the painting of the bus stop, a mural depicting the National Symbols and National Heroes were placed inside, including images of the nation’s first National Hero Robert Bradshaw; the first Prime Minister of St. Kitts-Nevis, Sir Dr. Kennedy Simmonds; and the present Prime Minister, Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.
Public Relations Officer of the Constituency Eight Young Labour Movement, Teshelle McClean-Warner informed SKNVibes that painting of the bus stop is a part of a “beautification project of our constituency. But we're basically dealing with the district of St. Peter's. On another venture, we will do another district, which will be Conaree”.
She informed that the freshly-painted bus stop was adopted by the Anglican Young People's Association (AYPA) and permission was sought from that group to have it painted.
Additionally, she provided background information on the project inspired by this year’s recently commemorated 30th Independence Anniversary of St. Kitts-Nevis.
“The whole concept came from the idea that it's 30 years of Independence that we are celebrating and we're giving back to the community. So what we've decided upon is to do a beautification project to paint the bus stops and, then on the inside, what we'll do is put a mural on the wall.”
Asked the purpose behind displaying the information on the mural, McClean-Warner responded: “Each child is supposed to know where he or she came from. Our National Symbols would depict that of the Coat of Arms, the Circus, the National Flag etc. So when a child comes here and sits and wait on a bus, he or she could actually see this while they wait so that they know their history.”
She is encouraging residents of the community and others who use the bus stop to take good care of it.
“We’re just asking residents that when you come here we're doing this for you and your children. So when you come and sit, admire but please do not discriminate it.”
The PRO thanked Ricardo’s for donating the paint, and Vere McClean of the Public Works Department as well as the Interim Committee of the St. Peter’s Executive and members of the Constituency Eight Young Labour Movement for supporting the initiative.
According to McClean-Warner, the Young Labour group is “a movement not politically oriented only, but we are here to serve the community. That’s our whole objective”.
