OAS Sponsors Seminar to Investigate the Sale of Drugs on the Internet

By: OAS, Press Release

October 1st, 2013  -- The Organization of American States (OAS), in collaboration with public and private institutions in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis is sponsoring a Seminar that will investigate the sale of drugs on the Internet.

The Seminar, organized through the OAS Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (OAS/CICAD) Secretariat, is being held at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort in Frigate Bay, from September 30 to October 3, 2013.

Given that the sale of drugs on the Internet has become a growing global problem, and bearing in mind that member countries of the OAS have received recommendations on this matter, through CICAD’s Multilateral Evaluation Mechanism (MEM) process, the Seminar in the Federation will seek to:
    - increase the awareness of the problem of internet sale of drugs
    - increase the capacity of officials to detect and investigate such cases, and
    - promote increased cooperation, coordination and the exchange of information among stakeholders at the regional and hemispheric levels

The event has attracted strong support from the law enforcement community, the customs, border security personnel, Ministry of Health and Social Services, the National Drug Council, the Ministry of Youth Empowerment and Information Technology, the Ministry of National Security and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Speaking from the OAS Office in Basseterre, OAS Representative Starret Greene reiterated the organization’s commitment to working closely with member countries in order to address all aspects of the illegal drug trade and to promote a multi-pronged approach to solving the drug problem.

The event is being facilitated by experts from Sweden and members of the OAS/CICAD Secretariat in Washington, D.C.
