BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - HEAD of the St. Kitts Teacher’s Union (SKTU) Ron Dublin Collins has made a clarion call for all teachers to embrace professional development to improve the education sector in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Speaking at a rally that followed the Annual Teachers Day March at the Independence Square yesterday (Oct. 4), Collins declared that the Union is ready to support teachers in attaining professional development.

“We want from the St. Kitts Teachers Union to call on teachers to embrace professional development, and the Union stands ready with its resources cooperating with agencies in and out of St. Kitts to provide professional development.”

He added that the Union is currently liaising with two universities, one of which is expected to visit the island in November, and that such development would lead to a stronger student populace.

“We are presently in consultation with two universities to work with us so that teachers can further develop themselves. One of the universities will be here in November to help the Teachers Union. We are serious about professional development. We believe if well trained, well positioned teachers who are prepared to stand ahead of the class, we will end up having a stronger student populace and a stronger education sector.”

Collins also urged teachers to support each other and restrain from alienation.

“I want to call teachers today to support one another. We must not be isolated in our plans but we must partner with one another. We must mentor those who need mentoring for the benefit of our children.”

He also called on teachers to support the Union.

Prior to the Rally, the streets of Basseterre were flooded with brown shirts as the SKTU marched in celebration of this year’s Teacher’s Week.

Hundreds of teachers were there in solidarity with the theme for the week affixed on their shirts - ‘A call for teachers taking the lead for quality education’ - as they marched and danced through the streets of downtown Basseterre.
